PRODUCT CARBON
FOOTPRINT (PCF)

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) expresses – in CO2 equivalent – the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated across the life cycle of a product (or service, process, event), in this way providing a clear picture of its impact on global warming.

Product Carbon Footprint is calculated using the same method as for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) but considering one single indicator. In fact, a PCF exclusively investigates the impact indicator for the Global Warming Potential (GWP). In this case, therefore, we are only speaking about climate change.

The principal methodological references are thus the same as for an LCA, but there is also the standard UNI EN ISO 14067 (Greenhouse gases – Carbon footprint of products – Requirements and guidelines for quantification) which in any case is based on the standards UNI EN ISO 14040 and 14044.

It is crucial to carry out a proper assessment of the carbon footprint of a company’s product or service: it makes it possible to identify the hotspots and main impact drivers, make informed decisions to improve environmental performances from an eco-design perspective, and represents an indispensable starting point for environmental communications whether business to business or business to consumer.
