INTERGOVERNMENTAL
PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (IPCC)
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the main international scientific organisation for assessing the science related to climate change. It was founded in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with a view to providing a clear, science-based picture of the state of the art of knowledge about climate change and its environmental and socio-economic impact.
The IPCC produces periodic reports called “Assessment Reports” which provide the most comprehensive and authoritative synthesis of scientific knowledge on climate change, its causes, potential impacts and response options.
These reports are fundamental to informing political decision-making worldwide and are often a key input into international climate negotiations, such as those held in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
