B CORP

A B Corp (Certified B Corporation) is a company that has attained B Corp certification. The certification is voluntary and issued by B Lab, a nonprofit set up in the United States with the mission to promote a business model which could create value for society, people and the environment and not just shareholder profit.

The first step to certification is filling out the B Impact Assessment (BIA), a questionnaire divided into 5 sections: governance, workers, environment, community, customers. If the company scores at least 80 out of 200, they can request an audit by B Lab. Not only does the questionnaire verify the company’s current impact through detailed assessment of its performances but it also helps set improvement targets to implement over time.

B Corp certification is valid for three years. However, the company is obliged to monitor and report on progress in the action plan drawn up to bring about improvements.

A B Corp certified company is not necessarily a benefit corporation, just as a benefit corporation is not necessarily B Corp certified.
