In a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) it is possible to assess the environmental impacts of a product or service from two perspectives: cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave.
Cradle-to-gate considers the entire life cycle of a product from raw material extraction (cradle) to when the product leaves through the factory gate (gate), meaning at the end of the production phase. The focus is on the stages of production and manufacturing and excludes from system boundaries subsequent phases such as the use and disposal of the product which are included in a cradle-to-grave perspective.
This approach, based on a defined system boundary, can also be reflected in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
