ECODESIGN

Ecodesign is a design approach which takes into account environmental considerations. In particular, the scope is to minimise the environmental footprint of products, processes or services throughout their entire life cycle.

Ecodesign involves a major focus on strategic innovation and in order to really work must be based on clear metrics which allow for informed decisions.

This is why Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or analogous science-based methodologies constitute an essential basis of any valid ecodesign project because they effectively substantiate it.

At times when referring to ecodesign we also talk about Life Cycle Design (LCD) or Design for sustainability (D4S), although there are some subtle differences. In the case of D4S, for example, the approach is even more holistic because it is not exclusively limited to the integration of assessments linked with environmental performances but also other aspects – such as social ones – which are relevant in terms of sustainability.
